Find Your Home

Research teams have transcribed US Census and Spartanburg City Directories data from the neighborhood’s origins in 1870 to the final residential history in 2020. The goal is to tell the story of every house and its inhabitants – as much as possible. In this section, you are able to search the database for individual residents across time.

We hope to continue to add content to these stories as the project continues. We are folding in photographs, memorabilia, oral history and other materials as we find them and can link them to individual houses and people. We see this website in general, and especially the Interactive Map and Find Your Home functions, as community-based activities. Please feel free to help build this history by contacting us through the Add to the History! tab.

Begin with a Basic Search. Enter one word at a time. For example, enter "Hartwell" to see how many entries report. To narrow the search, use the "Advanced Search" option.

When you used the Advanced Search, Basic Search will no longer function. To specify date range or year, use the Slide Bar. You will not be able to enter numbers into the "Year From" / "Year To" boxes.

In Advanced Search, after you have entered your search terms, click the "Search" box next to "Year To" box

Be sure to vary the spelling of your entries. Try multiple entries. Many names were misspelled or entered differently in US Census and city directory records.
